Birthday's keep on giving

I love the adult birthday. As a kid, the anticipation of the big day was, of course, exquisite, the day itself indulgent and completely self-focused, the only day of the year that this happened. But the adult birthday celebration is different. The day itself may or may not be anticipated. The reminder of aging might even be dreaded. But in my world, the celebrations surrounding birthdays go on and on: a breakfast here, a lunch there, margaritas with girlfriends, a dinner party with couples. There might be 5 or 6 separate celebrations, spanning weeks of time. My friend Ann celebrated a birthday at the end of May. She had many opportunities to celebrate with various friends, so much so that her husband Terry was rolling his eyes and groaning when we finally were able to have the long anticipated dinner for her that she had requested. And what a menu it was:

Feta and Red Bell Pepper Dip
Chile-Spiced Marinated Olives
Sesame Crusted Ono with Avocado and Balsamic Soy Syrup
Basmati Rice with Bell Pepper, Dried Mango, Macadamia Nuts & Fresh Pineapple
Fresh Blueberry Pie with Cinnamon
French Vanilla Ice Cream
